Easy Ham and Cheese Sliders Recipe

My family loves making these ham and cheese sliders with soft Hawaiian rolls, slices of ham, gooey melted cheese, and the most delicious onion butter brushed on top.

Ham and Cheese Sliders

Say hello to the most perfect crowd-friendly dish. These ham and cheese sliders are great for birthdays, game day, easy family dinners, and more! Both kids and adults go crazy for them. You may not think you need a recipe for these sliders… I mean, rolls, ham, cheese, done, right?

Well, after serving this exact version to friends and family, we can say you do, in fact, need this recipe in your life. Specifically, the homemade honey Dijon mayo and the onion butter you’ll brush all over the top. Bookmark this one! (It works incredibly well with your favorite deli ham or leftover baked ham).

Key Ingredients

  • Bread Rolls: The popular choice is Hawaiian sweet rolls (they are so soft!), but any package of slider-size rolls, like dinner rolls, works. A 12-ounce package fits nicely in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  • Ham: We’ve used thinly sliced deli ham in our photos, but these rolls are fantastic with leftover ham, too (see our brown sugar baked ham). You can also swap the ham for sliced deli turkey or chicken. Again, feel free to use leftover roasted turkey or roast chicken if you have it.
  • Cheese: Use your favorite sliced cheese. Swiss cheese is classic, but provolone, cheddar, mozzarella, or Munster all work. Just look for something that melts nicely.
  • Homemade Dijonaise: To keep your sandwiches from turning out dry, spread a little homemade Dijonaise over the bread before building them. We stir mayonnaise (homemade mayo is amazing), Dijon mustard, and honey together to make it.
  • Onion Butter: We make it with onion powder and salted butter, then brush it all over the top of the rolls. If you love the look of black speckles over the rolls, you can also scatter over some poppy seeds. We usually skip this ourselves, though, and prefer that shiny, buttery, golden-brown top instead.

How to Make Our Favorite Ham and Cheese Sliders

First, slice your sheet of rolls. There’s no need to pull the rolls apart. Simply use a serrated knife to slice horizontally through them, giving you a connected top and bottom sheet. Place the bottom sheet in a parchment-paper-lined baking dish, and set the top aside.

Next, spread on the homemade Dijonaise. In a small bowl, stir together mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and honey. Then, spread it evenly over the bottom and top sheet of rolls.

Layer the cheese and ham. Add an even layer of cheese across the bottom buns, using about half of your slices. Next, add a layer of ham, folding the slices just a little bit to give the sandwiches some height. Layer on the remaining cheese, then place the top half of the rolls over the sandwich.

Finally, brush with onion butter and bake. Stir melted butter with onion powder, then generously brush it all over the top of the rolls. Sprinkle with flaky salt, then cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Then, uncover and bake for 5 minutes more, or until golden brown.

What to Serve with Ham and Cheese Sliders

We’ve served these little sandwiches as an appetizer as many times as we’ve made them for an easy dinner. Other crowd-friendly appetizers to consider include our 7-layer dip, dill pickle dip, or easy baked hot wings.

If you are making these on a weeknight, our family loves a side of baked sweet potato fries or roasted potato wedges with homemade ketchup. Or try a veggie like sautéed broccoli or quickly sautéed green beans.

We love these easy baked ham and cheese sliders on Hawaiian rolls, but you can use any package of small, soft rolls to make the recipe below.

Makes 12 sliders

You Will Need

1 (12-ounce) package Hawaiian sweet rolls, like Kings

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon honey

5 to 6 ounces thinly sliced cooked deli ham

12 thin slices cheese, like Swiss, Cheddar, or Provolone (about 6 ounces)

3 tablespoons butter

½ teaspoon onion powder

Flaky sea salt for tops (optional)

Directions

1Heat oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on two sides to help remove the rolls after baking.

2Use a serrated knife to slice the sheet of rolls in half horizontally, trying not to break the individual rolls apart. Place the bottom half in the prepared pan, and set the top half aside.

3In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, mustard, and honey. Spread it evenly over the bottom sheet of rolls in the pan and over the cut side of the top sheet.

4Layer half the cheese slices over the bottom sheet of rolls, overlapping the slices as needed to cover completely. Arrange the thinly sliced ham over the cheese, folding it slightly to give it a bit of height. Layer the remaining cheese slices over the ham, then place the top half of the rolls over the cheese.

5In a small saucepan, melt the butter with the onion powder, then brush the tops of the rolls with it. Lightly sprinkle flaky sea salt over the tops (if using).

6Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered until the cheese is melted and the tops are golden brown, about 5 minutes. Using the parchment overhang, transfer to a serving platter. Cut into individual rolls so they pull apart easily.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Storing: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat, covered, in a 350°F oven or in a toaster oven.
  • Look for thin-cut cheese slices, or ask the deli counter to slice the cheese thinly so you can use 2 layers, sandwiching the ham.
