Our family’s favorite tostada recipe comes together in about 30 minutes, layered with seasoned ground meat, creamy refried beans, and all the best toppings.

We eat tacos a lot for dinner (they are a big hit with our son!), so Adam and I are always looking for fun new ways to switch things up. First, we turned our favorite ingredients into our popular taco salad, loaded nachos, and now we are obsessed with these baked tostadas. If you aren’t familiar, a tostada starts with a crispy, toasted corn tortilla (you can buy them from the store or make your own).
We top the crispy shells with refried beans, seasoned taco meat, and cheese, and then bake them until hot and melty. Just before serving, pile on your favorite taco toppings and dig in.
Key Ingredients
- Tostada Shells: Most stores sell these, but you can also make them at home. You can bake or fry them. Here’s our tostada shell recipe if you’d like to learn more.
- Refried Beans: Again, you can use store-bought (Siete refried beans are our favorite canned option). Or, make a batch of our homemade refried beans or refried black beans.
- Taco Meat: We’ve used the taco meat recipe shared below over and over in blog recipes. The seasoning is so good! Use ground meat of choice (our photos show ground turkey, but lean ground beef or chicken are great). Then, use our taco seasoning blend, which calls for spices you likely already have, tomato paste, and a bit of chicken stock or water. For the spice mix, you will need chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, and salt.
- Toppings: Cheese is a must, and we love making a simple lime sour cream and avocado mash for our tostadas, which is included in the recipe below. Then add your favorite extras, like shredded lettuce or cabbage, chopped tomatoes or salsa, and even a few dashes of hot sauce.

How to Make Tostadas
First, make the taco meat. We make this seasoned ground meat once a week (maybe more) because it is fast and we all love it. Start by browning the ground meat (in our photos, we used ground turkey), then add the spice mix and cook until it’s no longer pink. Then stir in the tomato paste and chicken stock, and cook for a few more minutes.

Then, assemble the tostadas. Lay the tostada shells on baking sheets so they don’t overlap, then add small spoonfuls of refried beans, a generous spoonful of the taco meat, and top with cheese. As you layer them, be careful not to crack the shells (this is why we don’t spread the beans on and instead add tiny spoonfuls).

Bake until hot and melty. Now, slide the baking sheets into a 400°F oven and bake for 5 to 8 minutes, until the shells crisp up and the cheese melts.
Finally, serve with your favorite toppings. Remove the baked tostadas from the oven and top with whatever you love. We make a simple lime sour cream (sour cream stirred with fresh lime juice and a pinch of salt), mashed avocado or guacamole, shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and sometimes a dash or two of hot sauce. Just keep in mind that while the shells are pretty sturdy, they will crack when you pick them up if you add too much weight.

Crispy tostada shells topped with creamy refried beans, perfectly seasoned taco meat, and all the best toppings. Our family loves this tostada recipe. We love it with ground turkey, but it works just as well with lean ground beef, ground chicken, and even ground pork.
Makes 8 tostadas
You Will Need
For the Taco Meat
1 ½ teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon dried oregano
¾ teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more as needed
1 ½ tablespoons avocado oil
1 pound (450 g) ground turkey (93/7) or lean ground beef
2 tablespoons (35 g) tomato paste
½ cup chicken stock or water
For the Tostadas and Toppings
8 tostadas (store-bought or homemade tostada shells)
¾ cup refried beans (from one 15-ounce can or homemade refried beans)
½ cup shredded Mexican cheese blend or Monterey Jack
3 tablespoons sour cream
1 medium-to-large avocado
2 limes, cut into wedges
Favorite taco toppings, such as shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, sliced green onions, pickled onions, pico de gallo, or hot sauce
Directions
1Heat the oven to 400°F (204°C). In a small bowl, stir together the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, and salt.
2Heat the avocado oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and sprinkle with the spice mixture. Cook, using a wooden spoon to break up the meat, until it begins to brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes more. Add the chicken stock (or water) and simmer until the sauce thickens, 2 to 3 minutes. Taste and adjust the seasoning with a bit more salt if needed.
3Lay the tostadas across two baking sheets, ensuring they don’t overlap. Add small spoonfuls of beans across each tostada (don’t spread the beans, as the pressure may crack the shells). Divide the taco meat evenly among the tostadas, then sprinkle the tops with cheese. Bake until the cheese melts and the shells are crisp, 5 to 8 minutes.
4While they bake, prepare your toppings. In a small bowl, make a lime sour cream by stirring together the sour cream, a pinch of salt, and the juice of 2 lime wedges. It should be drizzly; stir in a teaspoon of water if needed. In a separate bowl, mash the avocado with a pinch of salt and the juice of 2 lime wedges.
5Build the tostadas by drizzling them with the lime sour cream, adding a spoonful of the avocado mash, and finishing with your desired toppings. Serve with lime wedges on the side.
Adam and Joanne’s Tips
- Storing: Assemble tostadas right before serving to keep the shells crisp. If you are prepping ahead or have leftovers, store the cooked taco meat and refried beans in separate airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days, and store the tostada shells in an airtight bag or container at room temperature. When you are ready, assemble as directed above and bake.
